For more than a decade, the GRAMMY Museum® has explored and celebrated the enduring legacies of all forms of music. We highlight music’s creative process, major artists and trends in popular music, and the history of the GRAMMY Awards®, the premier recognition of recorded music accomplishment, through interactive and educational exhibitions and experiences. The Museum has curated more than 75 exhibitions — 25 of which have traveled to other cultural institutions around the world — that spotlight some of the most important music ever created.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... THE BEATLES!

Curated by the GRAMMY Museum, along with Fab Four Exhibits LLC, Ladies and Gentlemen...The Beatles!, explores and celebrates The Beatles’ impact on the American Experience from the fan perspective.

On February 7, 1964, four lads from Liverpool, England, stepped onto American soil for the first time as a band. Their performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” two days later officially launched the years-long frenzy that followed, known as “Beatlemania.” The cultural and musical landscape of America was forever changed by The Beatles. From their press conference at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York in 1964 to their 1966 concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, this exhibit documents John, Paul, George, and Ringo’s journey across America, using original artifacts, film and video interviews, photographs and interactives to tell the story.

THE PRISON CONCERTS: FOLSOM AND SAN QUENTIN

This exhibit offers a definitive view of Cash’s prison concerts, featuring candid and performance images of these two memorable concerts that solidified Cash's status as an outlaw king.

Widely known as the godfather of music photography, the late Jim Marshall maintained a 50-year career that resulted in more than 500 album covers, an abundance of magazine covers, and some of the most celebrated images in blues, jazz, country, and rock and roll, including those from Johnny Cash’s notable Folsom and San Quentin prison concerts. To showcase these powerful snapshots of a legendary musician by a legendary photographer, the GRAMMY Museum® presents The Prison Concerts: Folsom And San Quentin (Jim Marshall’s Photographs Of Johnny Cash), showcasing Marshall’s photos from Cash’s historic prison concerts in 1968 and 1969 featured in the art book Johnny Cash At Folsom & San Quentin.

  • The iconic "JC Flippin’ the Bird at San Quentin Prison"
  • The famous "Johnny Cash Getting off the Bus at Folsom Prison"
  • The rarely seen image of "Cash in Greystone Chapel at Folsom Prison." - The song "Greystone Chapel" was written by one of the inmates at Folsom, Glen Sherley. Cash recorded the song during the Folsom Prison concert with Sherley in the audience. Jim captured their shaking hands after Cash sang Sherley’s song.

SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME SONGWRITERS EXPERIENCE

The Songwriters Hall of Fame Experience celebrates the work and legacy of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and explores the mysteries behind the making of great music.

Through graphic panels, artifact displays, and interactive experiences, the exhibition examines the songwriter’s creative process, tells the stories of great songwriters – all of whom are members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame – and digs deep into the great compositional works that make up the American music treasury. Curated by the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®, the exhibit also uncovers the creative process of some of the Hall of Fame’s most revered songwriters and sheds light on many of their masterworks.

FAQ

EXHIBITION SIZE AND REQUIREMENTS

Exhibitions vary in size, but all require adequate storage for shipping crates, and appropriate museum-quality lighting and casework.

INSURANCE

The host institution will be required to provide a certificate of insurance before the exhibition ships.

COST AND SCHEDULE

A typical exhibition run lasts approximately 13-16 weeks and the associated rental fee is determined based on which exhibition is selected as well as its size and scope.

SHIPPING AND INSTALLATION

In addition to the exhibition rental fee, the host institution is responsible for paying shipping costs, as well as travel costs for up to three GRAMMY Museum staff members for installation and de-installation. Our traveling exhibitions team will communicate any additional labor or special equipment needs for loading and unloading at the host venue.

SECURITY

Trained professional guards or trained museum personnel whose sole duty is the supervision of the exhibition must be present in sufficient number to provide surveillance and crowd control while the exhibition is open for viewing, as well as a CCTV monitor system.
