Great Guitars: Laurence Juber
First internationally recognized as lead guitarist in Paul McCartney’s band Wings, Laurence Juber has since established himself as world-renowned guitar virtuoso, composer and arranger. Juber, known to his fans simply as “LJ,” has released 22 solo albums during his five-decade career. The latest, Under an Indigo Sky (Solid Air Records) is a jazz/blues-tinged solo guitar recording that was mixed at Hollywood’s legendary Capitol Studios by top engineer Al Schmitt. Juber’s LJ Plays The Beatles album was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s all-time Top Ten albums. His solo arrangement of “The Pink Panther Theme” was featured on the Best Pop Instrumental GRAMMY-winning album Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar. His performance of “Stand By Me” was heard nationally in a Diamonds Are Forever commercial. As a studio musician, he can be heard on recordings from artists as diverse as Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, Paul Williams, Seal and Barry Manilow, and he is featured on the soundtracks to hundreds of TV shows such as Home Improvement and movies including the Academy Award-winning Dirty Dancing, Good Will Hunting and Pocahontas. Juber’s latest endeavor, Guitar With Wings, is a lavishly produced book co-written by music historian Marshall Terrill and featuring a foreword by Denny Laine, that tells the story of Juber’s career told through his own words. Through candid, never-seen-before color and black & white photos, vintage advertising materials, guitars, equipment, memorabilia and the six-string legend’s encyclopedic musical memory, Juber takes readers on a unique, rock-n-roll journey. Juber will be joined by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, Scott Goldman, for an in-depth discussion. After the interview, Juber will perform a selection of songs and will sign copies of Guitar With Wings.
