The Drop: Victor Wooten

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning bassist, producer and composer, Victor Wooten, will release his 10th studio album, and first in five years, on Sept. 8 titled TRYPNOTYX. In support of the new album, Wooten will hit the road this fall with the Victor Wooten Trio following dates this month with Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.. Produced by Wooten, TRYPNOTYX features legendary drummer Dennis Chambers (Bootsy Collins, Santana), veteran saxophonist Bob Franceschini (Mike Stern, Paul Simon), and features singer Varijashree Venugopal and comedian/voicetrumentalist Michael Winslow. The youngest of five boys, Wooten began playing music at 2 years old, and was playing gigs by the tender age of 5 with the family band, the Wooten Brothers, opening for Curtis Mayfield and War, among others. He first “wowed music heads” nationwide (Kansas City Star) in 1987, as a founding member of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones. He won his first GRAMMY as part of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones in 1996 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for The Sinister Minister. His subsequent GRAMMY wins included Best Instrumental Composition for Almost 12 (1998), Best Contemporary Jazz Album for Outbound (2000) and The Hidden Land (2006), and Best Pop Instrumental Album for Jingle All The Way (2008). Named “one of the Top 10 Bassists of All Time” by Rolling Stone, Wooten has been voted “Bassist of the Year” three times by Bass Player magazine reader’s poll, and in February 2017 Huffington Post named him one of “50 Iconic Black Trailblazers,” pictured just after President Barack Obama. The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome Victor Wooten to the Clive Davis Theater for an intimate conversation on his upcoming album and distinguished career, followed by a live performance. The evening will be hosted by Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum, Scott Goldman.
