The Drop: Role Model

The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome Role Model (Tucker Pillsbury) to the Museum’s intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater for an evening celebrating his latest release, Kansas Anymore, his rising career, and creative process, with a performance to follow.

Role Model’s been in love. He was so in love he wrote his entire debut album Rx about it. But not all romances last forever, and the 27-year-old’s grieving of his last relationship is at the center of his sophomore album Kansas Anymore.

With over 45 million streams and 500 million+ views on TikTok across all tracks, Kansas Anymore is a folk-tinged, lyric driven album that encapsulates the warmth and comfort Role Model was seeking out when he wrote it. Featuring viral singles “Deeply Still in Love” and “Frances”, the album was a two year writing process, and includes production from Noah Conrad, Ian Fitchuk, Scott Harris & Jonah Shy.

“It was a roller coaster,” the singer says of the long and winding journey to making Kansas Anymore. He first began working on his new album in September 2022, while still touring his first album. He describes the early sessions as “all over the place” as he was struggling to find inspiration and the right sound. By summer 2023, however, his life started to feel like it was falling apart.

“At a certain point in the beginning of last summer — maybe it was a quarter life crisis I still don’t know — I became the most home sick I’ve ever been in my entire life,” Role Model recalls. The Maine-born performer started to go back home frequently, which complicated his romance with someone who lived back in California.

Kansas Anymore evokes the cozy warmth of Role Model’s trips back to Maine to find comfort during that time. It’s a folky project, inspired by Zach Bryan, Pinegrove, War on Drugs, Caamp and Andy Shauf, all artists he listened to when he was missing the East Coast.

Role Model is most looking forward to playing these songs live for the first time on his next tour, something he kept in mind while recording Kansas Anymore. He’s growing his band and preparing himself to play guitar on stage as well. “When someone brings up Role Model, I want them to think about the show and the performance,” he continues.

More than anything, though, he’s looking forward to the sense of pride he already feels over how this album came together. As much of a roller coaster it was to make the album and experience the heartbreak and homesickness that inspired it, Role Model is confident that it’s some of the greatest songs he’s made yet.
