With Special Guests Irvin Mayfield and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble, Sponsored by Amoeba MusicOver the course of a four-decade career, GRAMMY-winning jazz artist Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards while re-envisioning jazz classics. She’s performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, and Dizzy Gillespie, and has released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including Dear Ella, her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald that received a GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Bridgewater also won a Tony Award for her role as Glinda in 1975’s The Wiz, and received a British Laurence Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Lady Day. As a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, Bridgewater continues to appeal for international solidarity to finance global grassroots projects in the fight against world hunger. Set for release on August 11, Bridgewater’s latest album, Dee Dee’s Feathers, is a journey through the history of New Orleans as told through song collaborations with Irvin Mayfield and The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The album is an homage to the people and culture of New Orleans in honor of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The GRAMMY Museum welcomes Bridgewater and Mayfield to the Clive Davis Theater for an intimate discussion surrounding their career and new album, followed by a special performance featuring Bridgewater, Mayfield and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble, hosted by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation.
