Reel To Reel: Heart & Soul: A Love Story

The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to host a special screening of the new film Heart & Soul: A Love Story in honor of Black Music Appreciation Month. Heart & Soul: A Love Story is an award-winning documentary film featuring the untold heartwarming and wrenching oral histories from the unsung heroes of rhythm & blues that influenced the global trajectory of rock during the Fifties and Sixties, directed by pioneering singer, producer, and Film and Television Music Supervisor, Kenny Vance. Following the screening, entertainment journalist Brande Victorian will moderate a post-screening conversation with Vance.

Christopher “Kid” Reid, a Hip-Hop icon, comedian, TV music producer (Martin) and actor from New York City that represents one half of the duo Kid ‘n Play––stars of “House Party” which was recently inducted to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” impact–– will deliver a contextual opening monologue to introduce the Heart & Soul to the audience.

The feature-length film Heart & Soul: A Love Story pieces in verité a collection of Vance’s recordings, reflections he shot over a decade with trusted permissions, when he bonded with artists he admired, long-time friends, musical peers, and collaborators, who dominated the 1950s, like members of the Chantels (“Maybe”)––one of the first successful Black female groups, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers (“Why Do Fools Fall in Love”), the Dubs, and Little Anthony and the Imperials

These ground-breaking Black and Latino rhythm and blues artists transformed culture with their styling, dances, lyrics, and harmonies, ushering in a new mainstay of youth making music for kids their age. City landscapes––subways tunnels and school hallways were instruments where they evoked reverberations during acapella arrangements.

In addition to spotlighting the magic of the time, “Heart & Soul” delivers raw first-hand accounts of what it was like for youths entertaining uncharted waters of the emerging and corrupted entertainment industry of that day, with characters who exploited hopes and talents, ultimately muting career sovereignty that painfully shorted their reign under the limelight, and blocked their estates from just equity, and recognition.

Kenny Vance, a native of Brooklyn, New York, is an original member of the chart-topping Sixties group Jay and the Americans, the iconic opening act at the first-ever U.S. concerts of the Beatles as well as the Rolling Stones. Outside of performing, he’s watermarked many chapters in popular culture. Vance orchestrated debut guest performances by Prince, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown on SNL as Musical Director. His creative orbit also influenced the founding of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted band, Steely Dan. His producer and movie music supervisor credits include the soundtrack arrangements and original scores for “Animal House,” “Hair Spray,” “Looking for an Echo” and “The Warriors,” among others.

On the cusp of his eighth decade, Vance has harnessed these experiences to elevate his role as a lecturer, and preservationist of jewels of American mid-century music history with his award-winning documentary, “Heart & Soul,” a bold case study of his efforts. The film, which marks his Directorial debut, has garnered acclaim and a “Best Feature Film Documentary” award at the Garden State Film Festival.
