Celebrating Elvis

On what would have been Elvis’ 78th birthday, The GRAMMY Museum is proud to present a special discussion focusing on the “King of Rock-n-Roll.” Guests will get a unique view into the inner-workings of Elvis courtesy of two key people who worked closely with him: Mike Stoller and Jerry Schilling. To speak about Elvis’ creative and musical side will be Mike Stoller, who is one-half of the legendary songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller. If Elvis Presley was the king of rock & roll, then Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were certainly two of the most important powers behind the throne. It’s impossible to think of Elvis without thinking of Hound Dog Loving You, or Jailhouse Rock—all creations from the pen and piano of Leiber and Stoller. To speak about the more private, personal side of Elvis will be Jerry Schilling. Schilling was one of Elvis’ closest confidants, and knew him better than what the public perceived, which is partly why he is one of the most sought-after producers on not only Elvis’ career and life, but also for artists from that era of Rock’n’Roll. Schilling’s long list of accomplishments within the entertainment industry spans decades and reflects his versatility as a producer. He worked as a personal manager for hugely successful acts like the Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Wilson, Lisa Marie Presley and the Sweet Inspirations, and as tour manager for Billy Joel. After the discussion, moderated by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, panelists will take audience questions. Both Stoller and Schilling will be available after the event to sign copies of their books.
