An Evening With Trombone Shorty and New Breed Brass Band

The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome Trombone Shorty and New Breed Brass Band to the Museum’s intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater for an evening including a conversation with Trombone Shorty and Jenard Andrews (bandleader and snare-drummer of New Breed Brass Band) about their collaboration, recent album releases and more. A performance will follow.

ABOUT TROMBONE SHORTY:

If anybody knows their way around a festival, it’s Trombone Shorty. Born Troy Andrews, he got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four, he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band he assembled for his Electric Church World Tour. Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player, though. Catch a gig, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair, flip on any late-night TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them. Since 2010, he’s released five chart topping studio albums; toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, Ringo Starr, and countless more; played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz, and nearly every other major festival; performed four times at the GRAMMY Awards, five times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own Muppet; launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education; and received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book. Meanwhile in New Orleans, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness, hosts the annual Voodoo Threauxdown shows that have drawn guests including Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day, and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band, and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s hallowed final set, which has seen him closing out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young, the Black Keys, and Kings of Leon. His latest album is 2022’s Lifted.

ABOUT NEW BREED BRASS BAND:

New Breed Brass Band released their debut album Made In New Orleans in April 2023, produced by Trombone Shorty and recorded at his Buckjump Studio in New Orleans. Their signature sound is influenced by a multitude of artists with traces of expected local antecedents like Rebirth Brass Band and Soul Rebels Brass Band, but also funk arrangements inspired by Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower Of Power as well as rhythmic twists pulled from Cuban jazz, New Orleans bounce beats, and even rock drummers like Dave Grohl. This is second line music in conversation with everything from Caribbean music to No Limit Records to modern R&B in the vein of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak’s Silk Sonic. Second line music for and by the next generation.

New Breed Brass Band is Jenard Andrews (bandleader and snare-drummer), Revon Andrews (trombone), Mike Brooks (sousaphone), Yirma Yisrael and Orlando Gilbert (saxophone), Emanuel Mitchell and Chris Cotton (trumpet), and Tyreek Andrews and George Brown (bass drum). Jenard himself was born into second-line music: his father is the great New Orleans trumpeter James Andrews, who has played at jazz festivals around the world.

The band made their street debut in November 2013 at the Nine Times Second Line. Since then, they have showcased their originality touring in North America and Europe as well as opening for such diverse bands as The Fray, Red Baraat, Blackalicious, Dr. John, The Waterboys, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. With Made In New Orleans, they’ve forged a new path for 21st century second lines — it’s just up to listeners to follow their lead down the parade route.
