Jefferson Airplane came to epitomize the psychedelic scene, scoring a gold record with their 1967 album, Surrealistic Pillow. The group’s founding member and lead vocalist, Marty Balin, proved a pivotal element to their sound with his soulful tenor He wrote key compositions including “It’s No Secret,” “Today,” “Comin’ Back to Me,” “Plastic Fantastic Lover,” “Share a Little Joke,” and “Volunteers.” At the end of 1978, after contributing several major hits with Jefferson Starship, including “Miracles,” “Without Your Love,” “Count On Me,” and “Runaway,” Balin left the band. Today, he tours as a trio consisting of himself, Chuck Morrongiello on lead guitar and Lloyd Goldstein on standup bass. Balin has two new forthcoming solo albums: Good Memories, a 50-year anniversary tribute to Jefferson Airplane (Dec. 11, 2015) and The Greatest Love (Feb. 19, 2016). The GRAMMY Museum welcomes Balin to the Clive Davis Theater for an intimate discussion surrounding his career and the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Airplane, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of MusiCares and the GRAMMY Foundation. The discussion will be followed by a performance by Balin and his band.
