Dubbed UCLA’s Professor of Punk, Jessica A. Schwartz, Assistant Professor of Musicology at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, grew up in Los Angeles during the formative years of the city’s punk scene. Surrounded by L.A.’s creative spark, Schwartz began playing and writing music at an early age, and, after getting her first electric guitar at the age of 13, she became riveted by punk music. She attended UC Berkeley and became an active member of 924 Gilman St., Berkeley’s punk collective. In 2012, she received her PhD in Music from New York University, which was followed by an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in music at Columbia University. Currently, Schwartz teaches courses on punk music history at UCLA and is completing her monograph, Radiation Sounds: Marshallese Music and Nuclear Silences, which brings an aural perspective to U.S nuclear testing in the Pacific.
