The Grammy Museum is thrilled to host a special screening of Conviction of the Heart, the biographical documentary film about two-time Grammy Award-winning artist Kenny Loggins and a post-screening discussion with Kenny Loggins sharing insight behind the creative process of the documentary, plus a short performance in the Museum’s intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater.
ABOUT CONVICTION OF THE HEART
Legendary, multi-platinum, Oscar and Tony-nominated, Grammy and Emmy-winning songwriter and recording artist Kenny Loggins was a very shy, gawky, unpopular kid with low self-esteem. Even after his remarkable musical talents were discovered, Loggins thought he had to create a persona to do the rock star thing. This role-playing was fueled by his first business manager, who told him that the lifespan of a pop star was three years. Loggins spent the subsequent 50 years reinventing himself over and over, both to chase his artistic dreams and to stay in the game. He felt safer as a moving target. Along the way, he created what many call ‘the Soundtrack of their Lives”.
Loggins went from being a pivotal figure in the folk-rock movement with Loggins & Messina in the 1970s, to a solo career collaborating with Michael McDonald, Michael Jackson, Steve Perry, Melissa Manchester, Thundercat, Barbara Streisand, Richard Marx and Stevie Nicks on multi-Grammy-winning hits, and global recognition as the king of the movie soundtracks in the 1980s (“Footloose,” “Caddyshack,” “Top Gun,” “A Star Is Born,” etc.) Kenny Loggins has rocked stages worldwide, released 10 platinum albums, and landed hits all over the Billboard charts. His place in music history is marked by a unique gift for collaboration combined with the vision to evolve, adapt, and persevere in an industry that loves to eat its own.
This very intimate, authentic film takes us deep inside the creative process to explore Kenny’s artistic genius, his extraordinary gift for collaboration and his remarkable resiliency – past and present. We are backstage…and onstage with Kenny and Jimmy Messina at the 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert at the Hollywood Bowl’. And we are invited into Kenny’s private world as he reveals the challenges he faced along the way as a rock star dad and husband. Clive Davis, Jimmy Messina, Michael MacDonald, Richard Marx, Melissa Manchester, David Foster, Dean Pitchford, Kevin Bacon and many, many others help us
explore this epic story of musical creativity, perseverance and reinvention.
Kenny is back in the zeitgeist with the global success of “Top Gun”, ‘Footloose” and frequent cameos and shout-outs on “Family Guy”, “Archer” , “The Office”, “Frankie & Grace”, etc…inspiring younger audiences to discover his extraordinary catalog for the first time. And he has inspired generations as a Climate Change Activist with his song “Conviction of theHeart”…the song that Vice President Al Gore called the anthem of the Environmental Movement.
Loggins’s story is singular and unexplored. His struggles to stay in the game for over 50years as the music business transformed over and over again is epic. He has kept “the fire burnin’ bright” for over half a century with a stunning commitment to his art, to his long-time collaborators, to the environment and to his audience.
