On View - Jun 05, 2015 - Jun 05, 2015

To celebrate what would have been the late Joan Rivers’ 82nd birthday on June 8, 2015, we opened Joan Rivers: Can We Talk? Taking up just two display cases, but packed with a plethora of artifacts, the exhibit is the latest installment of the GRAMMY Museum’s tribute to the greatest comedic icons of all time.

Upon approaching the exhibit, visitors’ eyes are no doubt drawn to the extravagant stage costumes worn by Rivers, including several of her Bob Mackie originals and the outfit she wore on the cover of her New York Times bestseller, Diary of a Mad Diva.

Looking to the left in the second case you’ll find more evidence of Rivers’ pension for high fashion – a vintage Louis Vuitton traveling trunk that was used strictly for transporting shoes, of which Rivers surely had many.

Additional artifacts on display include Rivers’:

  • 1990 Daytime Emmy Award For Outstanding Talk/Service Show Host
  • 2014 Grammy For Best Spoken Word Album For Diary Of A Mad Diva
  • Family Photographs, Including Joan Rivers With Melissa Rivers On The Day Of Melissa’s Birth In 1968, And Joan Rivers On Her Birthday In 1945
  • 1984 Harvard Hasty Pudding Woman Of The Year Award
  • Hollywood Walk Of Fame Star Award

To her, comedy was music. There was a rhythm, but instead of notes, there were words. My mother devoted her life and career to making the world laugh.
– Melissa Rivers, Joan Rivers’ daughter

Joan Rivers: Can We Talk? will be on display through Sept. 20, 2015.
